Video Game Discourse Is So Tiring

Okay, I want to talk about something that’s been weighing on my mind. I love games and gaming culture, but discussions about them fucking suck.

If not for the hostility and weirdness, then certainly for the lack of growth. I find many people discuss games dishonestly. There is this incessant need for labels. Terms like “I’m a mechanics-focused gamer” or “I’m a casual” certainly helps give us an identity, but it also can be used as a means to deride others. Being the enthusiast that I am, I’m guilty of this to an extent, but we can still salvage the culture. Here are a couple of solutions:

No more gatekeeping: If someone likes playing more casual games, their opinion isn’t null and void if they decide to critique or discuss games outside of their lane.

Keep politics to a minimum: We all have inherent biases politically. It’s healthy hearing differing viewpoints; I truly believe it’s the only way to grow.

Emotional intelligence and maturity should come first: If fellow pixel warriors disagree with you, you should address them with the same respect and love as people you agree with.

Just a few suggestions. Let me know what you think in the comments, Peace.
